As a subscriber to the EdibleSpirit Experience we will send you a new mood board every 3 months, right before the solstice or equinox. We will then meet at a pre-appointed time for a LIVE Digital Ritual. This year we gathered on Friday Dec. 21st at 2pmPST/5pmEST for the EdibleSpirit LIVE Winter Solstice Ritual. You can watch the pre-recorded Ritual at the bottom of the page and read on to see the mood board.
PREPARE FOR THIS YEAR’S RITUAL:
All you need is:
A big candle, and as many tea-lights and holders as you might like to have around the house.
Representatives for all the elements: Sage or incense for Air, a candle for Fire, a small bowl of spring water, a dish of sea salt and/or some crystals.
Any other power objects you would like to ritually charge with the frequencies of the Solstice.
Pictures of ancestors and/or spiritual teachers you want to call in. (If you don’t have pictures you can write their names)
Pen and paper to make any notes
We try to keep the Winter Solstice Ritual as simple as possible because it’s that most wonderful time of the year and it’s really just all about the light within you and around you.

Let’s Talk About Solstice, Baby
The Darkest Hour
The Solstice is the moment when the sun enters Capricorn, reaching its lowest point in the sky and signalling the start of winter. It is the longest night and shortest day in the in the Northern Hemisphere and energetically is the “bottom of the year” because even though the weather stays cold for minute, the days start to get longer. The sun begins its annual climb again but not before pausing in this powerful moment of stillness (Solstice comes from the Latin Sol- meaning Sun and stit- meaning stopped or stationary).
By pausing to formally honor these moments of solar alignment (when the sun enters one of the cardinal signs of Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn) we have an opportunity to program our bio-energetic equipment (aka our mind, body and spirit) with intentions dialed into what these significant solar events represent.
Capricorn is the sign associated with the father, authority, and societal rules and morés. Its ruling planet is Saturn, which teaches us the hard lessons we need to learn in order to grow. Capricorn also initiates the practical energy that carries us through the winter and encourages putting one foot in front of the other and being diligent and practical, even if you don’t know where you’re going. There is an element of “knowing what you need to do to survive,” which is ultimately to just keep pressing on, little by little, doing due diligence all the while.
Meanwhile on Dec. 22nd at 9:48am PST we have a Full Moon in Cancer. This is the mother to the Capricorn Father, and it calls in a wave of powerful nurturing and comforting energy. Like Capricorn, Cancer is a Cardinal sign which kicks off the summer season. In general the cardinal signs have an explosive initiatory energy - they tend to kick off a process that unfolds over the three months that follow. The Cancer Full Moon in such close proximity to the Solstice will compel us to take care of ourselves and our loved ones this year, even as we work to practically achieve our goals in the world.
WE SEE YOU SOLSTICE
Remember that cosmic ritual observances are all about ALIGNMENT and CORRESPONDENCE - articulating an intention to align with during the solstice, then using little triggers that cue the mind/body/spirit to pull in the beneficial energies of the moment as needed while the season unfolds. This is a subtle, but powerful way to stay present and empowered - own your energy, own your time, own your intention and you are magically very very rich bitch. The suggestions on the mood board are to be used throughout the season but they are especially useful on or around the days of the actual solstice.
(NOTE: Alignment can cause crazy great things to happen)
Colors to POP:
Clockwise from top left we’re calling them: Yellow Snow, Inner Eye, All U Need, and Deep Woods. Calling on influences of Winter Imperfection, Clarity of Mind, Offering Everything (when you feel you have nothing) and Endurance for the months ahead.
Crystals to VIBE:
Onyx for protection and to gaze into the void. Lapis Lazuli and Iolite to stimulate the upper centers (3rd eye and crown) while allowing the solstice light to calm and soothe the lower centers (root, sacral and solar plex). Mangano Calcite to spread gentle, relentless unconditional love through yourself and then to others. Lemon Quartz for a fresh take on a year ahead that will certainly be bright.
Nibbles to NOSH:
Simple, nourishing, warming, grounding foods are key now. The best possible thing would be a soup of root vegetables and wintery herbs. We like a simple soup of diced sweet potato or squash with a base of celery, carrots, onions, garlic, and ginger. You could also include turnips, rutabaga, malanga, cauliflower or anything else super wintery. Add everything to a big pot along with a can of coconut milk and enough water to cover the vegetables. Bring to a boil and simmer over med. heat. You can add a bouquet garni of thyme and rosemary while the veggies simmer. Once they are nice and soft (about 30-45 min) remove the bouquet garni and add a pinch of ground cinnamon with salt and pepper to taste. Puree with an immersion blender or in batches using a stand blender. Serve with a dollop of sour cream or a drizzle of flavored oil.
Essential Oils to ANOINT:
Use sacred smokes and clear fresh scents that promote reverence and optimism through the dark days of winter. Rosemary and Douglas Fir will keep things crisp and seasonal throughout. Try Vetiver and Patchouli to connect deeply to the Earth. Use Lemon in January to stay refreshed and hopeful. Go for Tobacco flower if you’re looking for woodsy romance in the middle of winter.
The Winter Solstice is all about minimalism. This year we are avoiding decadent holiday shimmers and shines, instead opting for looks that are humble and even austere. Blacks, whites, neutrals, rich browns, dark navys. The look requires you to look closer. Simple at first, rich and textured upon closer inspection.
FACE: Let’s fuck with ideas of “WHAT IS NUDE?” Blending creamy taupes into shimmery cocoas into matte mahogany. Layer monochromes that gradiate almost imperceptibly into the next - eyes that flow from midnight to slate to charcoal. From the palest pink to clear white to a touch of silver. Also, brown on brown on brown. Use reds sparingly to add touches of color on the lips and cheeks, everything else wants to be a winter prince/ss cryogenically frozen/buried in the rock hard earth, waiting to emerge when they fall in love with themselves.
BODY: Looks like a Monk, Feels like a Pimp. Channeling a wood witch trying to make it in the real world, a classy intersex hermit or reputable bar wench. Mixing fitted menswear cuts on top with an explosion of skirt on the bottom or slick bottoms with Olsen-twin-style bag lady friar tuck layers on top.
HAIR: The coif for the winter season mixes a clean cut with an IDGAF attitude. You want to purposely mess up whatever you think you’re supposed to do. If your hair is stick straight, play with volume and curl and messiness. Crew Cut? Splash some color on it like ur a punk. If it’s Curly and you like it locked up, brush those babies out and give us some cute fro vibes. If you’re somewhere wavy in between consider adding twigs, brambles and berries into your snarls - WINTER IS A TIME TO FOCUS ON THE INSIDES - align with this by calculatedly choosing to present hair that is just left or right of center.
We’ve selected the tunes we played while gathering this moodboard together. Send us stuff you think should be added!
